The Subways

The Subways enter the stage unto the expected boisterous chants of “Charlotte” “Charlotte”, they whip out the first new album song of the night ‘Kalifornia’. A typically raucous subways song that leads onto former album title track ‘Young For Eternity’ where I couldn’t help but feel Billy was disappointed with the lack of a high vertical base to vault off, settling instead for horizontal leaps.

‘Oh Yeah’ succeeds in getting the crowd whipped into a frenzy unsurprisingly, the only surprise being not saving their best for last, the first song to feature the love or hate Charlotte vocals in-between the bobbing bass girl marauding about the stage.

As they launch into brand new single ‘Alright’ the mic cuts out and we are plunged into darkness, Billy throws a tongue in cheek hissy fit at the guitar tech, which brings a chorus of “We love you subways, we do”, to the nearly funny “Subways taste so good”.

“I Want To Hear What You Have Got To Say” brings the predictable sing along moments though the crowd didn’t quite manage to keep any resemblance to the lyrics for long. As ‘With You’ arrives the crowd can actually sing along respectably but Billy won’t leave it to chance. With the atmosphere at its highest point so far, the sweet whiff of 500 folks worth of sweat drifting around the room, we are in the dark again for the classic will they or will they come back on for an encore.

The encore commences with last single ‘Girls and Boys’ it’s classic rock you know who emulative riffs. Onto set closer ‘Rock n Roll Queen’ its time for Wrexham to get mental with Billy’s over top use of the f-word getting the crowd whipped up as if they even needed it. He scouts out his trademark dive into the crowd, ascending up the rafters as if he were a child scampering along monkey bars before propelling himself into the crowd, who seemed unwilling to break his fall.

As the cooler than cool laugh and snigger at Billy’s clichéd attempts to woo the crowd it works a treat and makes for a great atmosphere, which you don’t see often round these parts.
