Video Nasties

Video Nasties playing Don’t Die Just Yet at Central Station, in the small LED lit room which I have come to love after loathing shooting in there with no flash, with flash no problem. This was also my first gig of 2009.
Got some creative shots, as the above two show, also playing were new local band Unseen Archives, Swanton Bombs and the amazing Threatmantics.

The Joy Formidable
Posted by paul - 21/01/09 at 01:01:00 pmCrewe, it’s a lovely place, unlucky for me the venue is opposite the station so I never got to experience what else Crewe had to offer.
The Box is quite a cool little venue though, Joy Formidable were ace as usual, these pictures are shall we say colourful. Lighting was erratic to say the least, all over the place, just too harsh for such a small but high stage.

Sŵn Festival Day Three
Posted by paul - 07/01/09 at 12:01:43 pmDay Three. Sunday 16th November. Various - Cardiff.
Day Three I Stayed around familar parts consisting of the three venues Barfly, Clwb Ifor Bach and Kaz Bar, so I never went to The Gate, looked ace I regret not going, The Point was’nt worth my time or money.
I started off at the Barfly were delays confused causing me to shoot bands I thought were the next band on untill Tubelord came on, got some great pics of them, they were even better than they were at In The City, also matching my jofo t shirt, thankfully it was’nt awkward, we had a giggle.
Dananananaykroyd, can’t put into words how excited I was about this gig, crossing my fingers that they’d do the ‘Wall of Cuddles’, the last gig I shot of theirs well did’nt have enough standing people for a wall. I’ve never taken so many shots with flash, got some ace angles and sure enough the ‘Wall of Cuddles’ occured, for those who don’t know they split the crowd down the middle ala the ‘Wall of Death’ but the difference is when the crowd charge at each other their only weapons are cuddles, what band can get a crowd to do this? I am very pleased with the shots of the ‘Wall of Cuddles’, i did’nt think i’d get any good ones the first time with not knowing exactly what to expect.
The School were good in a retro pop way, my pics reflect that I think especially the high contrast mono’s at Clwb Ifor Bach, soon made my way across the road for Josh Weller, what hair! sorry had to get that in first, great music though had a fair few feet tapping.
Skatar, er neon lycra pants? yes I were scared and hoping not to be scarred for life, but when the singer explains how they forgot something once when they had arrived at a venue and got their manager to arrange for them to pick said items up, turned it were their lycra pants!, its this moment that I realise it just makes perfect sense.
Pulled Apart By Horses at the Kaz Bar, oh dear they were’nt prepared for this lot, had a ball shooting them, funniest moment would be a photographer I’d chatted to, so I knew he liked heavier stuff, proceed to mosh with the band and crowd with camera in one hand, look forward to shooting them again at Clwb Ifor Bach next year.
Agaskodo Teliverek were weird and wonderfull downstairs at Clwb Ifor Bach then I went upstairs for the headliners Future of the Left, my flash went on the blink again, I had to wait ages for the flash to fire up after each shot, tried a few non flash. For some reason I decided to leave to catch the end of Micachu and the Shapes, as I’d missed them before at In The City, really regret this now, only caught one song and missed when it all kicked off at the Future of the Left gig, oh well I know for next time if I get the chance to shoot a whole FOTL gig.
Sŵn better than In the City? band wise easily, fun times well evens really, met some ace people at In The City and at Sŵn made a few good contacts, Cardiff though wins out over Manchester City wise, but then again the hotel may have been smarter but it sucked. Still I will surely be going again to both next year.
